Hey guys!! Happy Marathon Monday! Today is an exciting and special day for a bunch, and by a bunch, I mean MILLIONS of people. The Boston marathon is today. It is held every year on Patriot’s Day (every third Monday in April). If you don’t know much about marathons, the Boston Marathon is a big deal. In terms of onsite media, the Boston Marathon is ranked the second largest single day sporting event in the whole world (right behind the Super Bowl). Approximately 1 million spectators line the course annually, which makes it New England’s most widely viewed sporting event. You have to qualify for this marathon, so there are a lot of great runners here from all over the world.
Jaeme and I have the awesome opportunity to be in Boston to watch our dad and uncle run! We are so excited and so grateful for the opportunity to be apart of this great race… Even though we will just be cheering and ringing our annoying cowbells on the sidelines.;) I have been on the sidelines of countless marathons to cheer my dad on. It is truly motivating and inspiring watching the runners come through the finish line. Some come across the finish line so strong, and some come across with two people basically carrying them through. There is something about watching people accomplish a goal that they have trained so hard for. Races really are a way to bring communities together.
This year is a very special year, due to the bombings that took place last year. We were all mortified, surprised, and disgusted that anyone would do such a thing, and especially something that effected so many innocent peoples lives. This year, there will be around 10,000 more runners participating. There will be around 36,000 runners! It is amazing to me how everyone handled the horrifying events. There are signs and t-shirts that say “Boston Strong” everywhere you go here. It’s amazing how people helped and supported each other through these tough times and are continuing to support one another. In a speech last year concerning the events, Joe Biden ended with these words: “We are Boston. We are America. We respond, we endure, we overcome, and we own the finish line.” I love that. I think it shows that we can still be united as a country and support each other. We are America!!! Woo! Now go kick some booty all of you runners! We are cheering for all of you today! Thank you for being examples of health and wellness and determination, and for inspiring us all to be better.
Okay okay, you convinced me …I’ll show pics of our trip so far! Haha And tune in later for my dad’s results and of course, a picture overload from the race!
