We all go through times where we lack the motivation to continue (or start) exercising. I know I have times where I really have to convince myself to get out the door and get going, but once I do, I never regret it. I always feel so much better after I workout and I am able to let go of a lot of stresses. Taking time for yourself and taking care of yourself is important!

I want to share some tips that can help you stay motivated to reach your fitness goals:

Set clear goals

Make sure you are setting specific goals that you want to hit in a certain time period. Make sure it is a realistic goal for you and is something that you really want. Many people find it helpful to set certain rewards for themselves when they hit milestones in their goals. This can be anything from buying a new workout top to treating yourself to a pedicure. Try to steer clear of food related rewards.

Sign up for a race

Make sure it is a realistic distance for you but is also a distance that you will have to work towards. This is great because it gives you a date that you have to be ready by, and it will force you out the door on those hard days. My upcoming half marathon (only 2 weeks now!) is one of the only things that has pushed me out the door this winter.

Dress the part

It doesn’t matter whether you are exercising at a gym, outdoors, or in the comfort of your own home, you will feel better getting out of that ratty old t-shirt and into some real workout clothes. Old Navy and Target both have great (and cute) workout gear that will not break the bank, and they both put their stuff on sale all the time. Get something you feel comfortable and confident in. I promise you will be amazed at how big of a difference this will make.

Schedule it in

Do not assume that you will workout once you get everything else done because that will never come, and if it does, you will not want to workout by then. Look at each day and decide when you are going to workout and schedule it in. Make sure to stick to it. We are all busy for our own reasons, so find what works for you. It may mean that you have to do it before or after work or once the kids go to bed, but it will be worth it.

Find a workout buddy

Get with someone that has similar goals and that will be a positive influence to you. Check in with each other when you workout separately and continue to share and update your goals with each other. Not only will this help keep you accountable, but it can help you feel more comfortable going to the gym or trying a new form of exercise.

Change it up

Sometimes we just get burned out and need to change up our routine. Find something new to do that you will be excited about! Again, a workout buddy can help you feel more comfortable doing this.

Take a few rest days

There is nothing wrong with needing a few days off. In fact, a lot of times we will come back stronger after a few rest days if we are feeling worn out. This can help rejuvenate you to get back into the spin of things. Schedule in your next workout after these rest days to make sure you get going again.
